Potential Reunion of Hulk and Spider-Man
Mark Ruffalo might be making a comeback as the Hulk in the upcoming fourth installment of the Spider-Man franchise, titled “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, it’s still uncertain whether a formal agreement is in place for him to reprise his role as Bruce Banner, the Incredible Hulk.
Returning and New Faces
In addition to Ruffalo, the film will feature returning stars Zendaya, who plays M.J. Jones-Watson, and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds. Joining the Spider-Man universe for the first time will be Jon Bernthal, taking on the role of the Punisher. Bernthal recently appeared in the Disney+ series “Daredevil: Born Again” and is set to headline his own special.
The movie will also introduce new characters, portrayed by Emmy winner Liza Colón-Zayas from “The Bear” and Sadie Sink, recognized for her role in “Stranger Things.” The screenplay is penned by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
Hulk’s Role in Spider-Man’s Journey
A significant aspect of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films has been his relationships with older mentors. In previous installments, he was guided by well-known figures such as Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. “No Way Home” additionally featured Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, along with a remarkable crossover of past Spider-Men, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner would align perfectly with this trend, despite never leading a solo film. The character had a substantial co-lead role in “Thor: Ragnarok” and made appearances in the Disney+ series “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.”
Excitement Builds for New Suit Reveal
In an effort to build excitement, Sony and Marvel shared a nine-second teaser on Friday morning, showcasing Holland’s new Spider-Man suit in celebration of National Spider-Man Day. The clip features a close-up of the suit along with the message, “something brand new is coming.” “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is set to hit theaters on July 31.
Industry Insights
The Hollywood Reporter was the first to reveal Ruffalo’s potential involvement in the film, though both Sony and Marvel have opted not to comment on the matter. Ruffalo is represented by UTA and Lighthouse Management.
