Kim Cattrall Reflects on the Cancellation of the Series
Following the announcement that the sequel to Sex and the City has been canceled, Kim Cattrall, the only original cast member not to return for And Just Like That, shared a cryptic message on social media.
Memories of a Cultural Phenomenon
Sex and the City premiered in 1998, captivating audiences with its groundbreaking take on romance and relationships. The series, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis, sparked a cultural phenomenon that led to a revival of their beloved characters more than two decades later.
For four years, And Just Like That brought joy to fans with nostalgic references and even featured a brief cameo from Cattrall. However, with the recent cancellation news, fans speculate that the 68-year-old actress might have expressed her feelings in her latest Instagram post.
Cancellation Announcement
The series showrunner, Michael Patrick King, announced the cancellation Friday morning, stating, “And just like that… the ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end.” He elaborated, saying, “While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That… season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop.”
King, along with Parker and executives Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, decided to conclude the series with a two-part finale, expanding the original order from 10 episodes to 12. He expressed gratitude to the viewers, thanking them for letting the characters into their homes and hearts over the years.
Cattrall’s Response
Shortly after the announcement, Cattrall posted on Instagram a scenic image of a sunset over a river with the caption, “It’s the end of a very long week.” Many fans interpreted her post as a commentary on the show’s cancellation. One commenter noted, “Translation: finally this thing is over (in a Samantha voice ).” Another remarked, “And Just Like That… Samantha sat down to watch the sunrise, took a drink from her glass of champagne and celebrated Karma.”
Previous Speculations and Clarifications
Upon the show’s debut in 2021, fans were surprised when Cattrall did not appear in the premiere episode. Speculations circulated regarding her absence, with some linking it to her well-documented feud with co-star Sarah Jessica Parker. However, Cattrall clarified in a Variety interview, stating, “I was never asked to be part of the reboot. I made my feelings clear after the possible third movie, so I found out about it like everyone else did — on social media.”
