Foo Fighters have appointed Ilan Rubin as their new drummer, filling the vacancy left by Josh Freese’s recent dismissal from the band. A source confirmed to Variety that Rubin, who has been a touring member of Nine Inch Nails since 2009, will take over drumming duties. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to break the news. It’s still uncertain whether his position will be permanent or solely for upcoming tours, as the band is scheduled to perform in Jakarta, Singapore, and Mexico City starting in October.

In an unexpected turn of events, Josh Freese will replace Rubin as Nine Inch Nails’ touring drummer for their forthcoming “Peel It Back” tour. Freese had a longstanding tenure with Nine Inch Nails from 2005 until 2008. Although Rubin was originally set to participate in the tour, he reportedly informed frontman Trent Reznor of his commitment to Foo Fighters instead, as confirmed by THR. Nine Inch Nails appeared to acknowledge Freese’s new role with a post on X, expressing enthusiasm about his return.

Rubin has established himself as a versatile drummer over the years, collaborating with bands such as Angels & Airwaves and Paramore. Notably, he became the youngest inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 while with Nine Inch Nails.

Freese, a seasoned musician, has a rich history of playing with various acts, including Devo, A Perfect Circle, and Guns N’ Roses. In May, he announced via social media that he had been let go from Foo Fighters, where he had performed as a replacement for the late Taylor Hawkins for several years. “I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band,” he stated. Freese noted that in his 40 years of professional drumming, he had never been dismissed from a band, leading to feelings of shock and disappointment. Nonetheless, he declared that he would remain fine, jokingly teasing his followers with a potential list of reasons for his departure, which included humorous items like whistling the Foo Fighters’ hit ‘My Hero’ incessantly on tour and not attempting to grow a beard.
