Donald Trump expressed his endorsement of Sydney Sweeney’s popular American Eagle advertisements, following revelations that the ‘Euphoria’ star is a supporter of the Republican Party. Trump made his comments while boarding Marine One on Sunday, after The Guardian reported her registration as a Republican voter in Florida, a few months ahead of his return to the White House.
Trump’s Enthusiasm for Sweeney
Upon being asked about Sweeney, Trump beamed and remarked, “She’s a registered Republican? Oh. Now I love her ad! Is that right? Sydney Sweeney … You’d be surprised at how many people are Republicans.” He further stated, “If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.”
Comparing Successes and Failures
Trump later shared his thoughts on Truth Social, contrasting the success of Sweeney’s ads with what he called “TOTAL DISASTER” campaigns from companies like Jaguar and Bud Light. He wrote, “Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there. It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying off the shelves.’ Go get ‘em Sydney!”
Public Reaction and Backlash
The ads have sparked a heated social media debate over their message, with Sweeney’s slogan, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue.” Critics, including rapper Doja Cat, have mocked the commercials, which some believe allude to eugenics.
Conservative circles have also reacted strongly, with Vice President JD Vance weighing in: “My political advice to the Democrats is continue to [call] everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive a Nazi,” he stated on the Ruthless podcast.
Support from American Eagle
Piers Morgan, an acquaintance of Trump, criticized the backlash by saying, “The Sydney Sweeney furor perfectly epitomizes why the woke left is so bonkers. They call everyone a Nazi or white supremacist, even when she’s obviously neither, and they hate women celebrating beauty & sex appeal. It’s why woke is dead – we all just laugh at their idiocy now.”
In defense of their campaign, American Eagle affirmed, “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
