Daniel Day-Lewis Makes His Acting Comeback
Daniel Day-Lewis is officially returning to the screen after a lengthy retirement. The acclaimed three-time Oscar winner is featured in the trailer for his upcoming film, “Anemone,” a poignant family drama directed and co-written by his son, Ronan Day-Lewis.
A Family Drama Unfolds
“Anemone” marks Daniel Day-Lewis’ first role in eight years and also stars notable actors such as Sean Bean, Samuel Bottomley, Safia Oakley-Green, and Samantha Morton. The film is set in Northern England and follows a middle-aged man, portrayed by Bean, who embarks on a journey into the woods to reconnect with his estranged brother, played by Day-Lewis. Their complex relationship is shaped by a troubled past that remains influenced by traumatic events from decades prior.
Reflecting on a Remarkable Career
Before his retirement, Day-Lewis starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2017 film, “Phantom Thread,” which earned him his sixth nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. His previous wins in this category came from his performances in “My Left Foot” (1989), “There Will Be Blood” (2007), and “Lincoln” (2012). Throughout his distinguished career, Day-Lewis has also been honored with numerous BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and SAG Awards, solidifying his status as one of the greatest actors of his generation.
A History of Retirement and Return
This marks the second time Daniel Day-Lewis has stepped away from acting. His first hiatus occurred in 1997 when he took to Italy to pursue shoemaking after starring in Jim Sheridan’s “The Boxer.” However, he returned to the big screen in 2002 to deliver a memorable performance as Billy the Butcher in Martin Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York.”
Upcoming Release
“Anemone” will make its world premiere at the New York Film Festival. Focus Features is set to release the film in limited theaters on October 3, with a nationwide rollout planned for October 10.
